South Korean prosecutors indict 63 over courthouse rampage by Yoon supporters, authorities says

(Forelines) – According to the authorities, South Korean prosecutors mentioned on Monday 63 people for their role in assaulting a court building recent month to protest the imprisionment of impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol, with a few facing allegations carrying up to a seven-year jail term.

Hundreds of angry Yoon Suk Yeol supporters assault the Seoul Western District Court in the pre-dawn hours of January 19, demolishing property and trespassing into judges’ chambers as certain live-streamed the event.

Of the 63 people indicted on allegations that inclusive of aggravated obstruction of official duty, devastation of official property, attempted arson and attack, 62 remain in detention, the prosecution authority stated by telephone.

According to an official, Eight others were still being inquired and there could be more people prosecuted.

The incidents of an angry mob overwhelming police as they went on a rampage through the court building shocked the nation and drew condemnation from government authorities, who urged it an alarming challenge to the judiciary and the rule of law.

Conviction of a allegation aggravated obstruction of official duty conveys a maximum prison sentence of seven years, as per the court sentencing guidelines.

Yoon Suk Yeol is further a separate Constitutional Court trial appraising parliament’s impeachment alleging him of violating his constitutional duty as president.
