At 24th BIMSTEC Senior Officials’ Meeting, India reaffirms regional cooperation in Bay of Bengal Region

Jaisdeep Mazumder, India’s Secretary (East) Ministry of External Affairs represented India virtually at the 24th BIMSTEC Senior Officials’ Meeting and reaffirmed India’s commitment to regional cooperation in the Bay of Bengal Region, according to Randhir Jaiswal, an Official Spokesperson of the India‘s Ministry of External Affairs, on Tuesday.

The officials address issues of cooperation, stressing active participation of member states for enhancing security in the region.

Randhir Jaiswal stated in a post on X, “Secy (East) Jaideep Mazumder represented India at the 24th BIMSTEC Senior Officials’ Meeting (virtual), reiterating India’s commitment to regional cooperation in the Bay of Bengal Region.The meeting discussed various issues of cooperation emphasizing active participation of member states in strengthening sustainable development, connectivity, security and people to people exchanges in the region.”

At the 24th BIMSTEC Senior Officials Meeting (SOM) hosted by Thailand virtually on Thursday, the senior officials assessed the progress of BIMSTEC since their previous meeting in March 2023, according to a press release by the India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). The official discussed on several key areas of cooperation in the region, such as sustainable development, connectivity, security and people to people exchanges.

“Several documents with regard to Plans of Action for cooperation in specific areas, certain new mechanisms of cooperation, and cooperation with external partners were finalised. The issues with regard to the forthcoming 6th BIMSTEC Summit were also discussed,” according to a press release by Ministry of External Affairs of India.

“The Indian delegation reiterated India’s steadfast commitment to BIMSTEC and its vision for a robust, vibrant, and prosperous region,” it further added.

The 24th virtual session of the BIMSTEC Senior Officials Meeting was chaired by Thailand’s Deputy Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Paisan Rupanichkij. Nepal was represented by Acting Foreign Secretary Amrit Rai.

On Thursday, Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, in a post on X, “Acting Foreign Secretary @amritrai555 led a Nepali delegation to 24th virtual Session of BIMSTEC Senior Officials’ Meeting chaired by HE Mr Paisan Rupanichkij, Deputy Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs of Thailand, today.”
