According to UNESCO, 50 – 60 percent world’s annual fresh water flows come from mountains.They preserve water as ice and snow and sustaining billions of people across the globe. Approximately, 2/3 of irrigated agriculture relies on mountain waters. These sources are crucial for security of food. Around 24 percent of the world’s landsurface is covered by mountain areas. They sustain wide – ranging ecosystems and cultures, as per UNESCO. Additionally, 40 percent of mountain regions are covered by forest, controlling water flow. Although tensions between Canada and the United States are high, Canadians bought a record amount of American shares in February, as U.S. stock markets hit an all-time high, official data indicated on Thursday. Statistics Canada said Canadians snapped up C$29.8 billion in U.S. shares, focused on large capitalization technology and financial firms. Canadians had sold C$15.6 billion in January. British lenders expect to see demand for mortgages level off in the months ahead after they reported an increase in early 2025, a Bank of England survey showed on Thursday. Three people have died, one is seriously injured and another is missing after a cable car crashed to the ground near Naples in southern Italy on Thursday, mountain rescue services and firefighters said. According to scientists, Previous year was Ukraine’s worst year for wildfires in over three decades of record-keeping, as shelling along front lines in the conflict with Russia triggered an unprecedented number of blazes. Forest fires in Ukraine in 2024 burnt more than twice the area destroyed by fire in the entire 27-country European Union in 2024, the EU’s Joint Research Centre – its independent science research service – said in a report published this week.
