(Forelines) – Kevin Hassett, White House economic adviser stated on Wednesday that United States President Donald Trump has been dissatisfied with the state of trade negotiations with India and thinks his announcement of a 25% tariff will improve the situation, according to Reuters report.
Hassett told reporters at the White House, quoted by Reuters that more details on the increased penalty Trump proposed earlier would be available “shortly” to Trump and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer,.
“I think President Trump is frustrated with the progress we’ve made with India but feels that a 25% tariff will address and remedy the situation in a way that’s good for the American people,” Hassett stated, cited by Reuters.
As per Reuters, Trump declared earlier Wednesday in a post on Truth Social that he will begin levying a 25% tariff on Indian imports on August 1. Although he provided no specifics, he added that the fifth-largest economy in the world would likewise be subject to an undisclosed penalty that would begin on Friday.
