(Forelines) – On the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met bilaterally with Canadian Prime Minister Mr. Mark Carney, on Tuesday.
“This was the first in-person interaction between the two leaders since Prime Minister Carney assumed office following Canada’s recent general elections. The meeting provided an opportunity for both sides to hold frank and forward-looking discussions on the state of India-Canada relations and the way ahead,” according to PMO press release.
The leaders reiterated the significance of India-Canada relations, which are founded on respect for the rule of law, common democratic values, and a dedication to preserving territorial integrity and sovereignty. They emphasized the necessity of pursuing a positive and well-rounded partnership based on solid interpersonal relationships, expanding economic complementarities, and respect for one another’s worries and sensitivities.
In this respect, both parties decided to take measured and beneficial actions to bring the relationship back to stability, starting with the High Commissioners’ early return to their respective capitals.
In order to restore confidence and accelerate the relationship, the leaders emphasized the significance of resuming working-level and senior ministerial engagements across a range of domains.
Future partnership prospects in sectors like renewable energy, digital transformation, artificial intelligence, LNG, food security, essential minerals, higher education, mobility, and supply chain resilience were deliberated by the leaders. They restated their mutual commitment to advancing an open and free Indo-Pacific.
In order to clear the path for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), the leaders also talked about the significance of resuming the Early Progress Trade Agreement (EPTA) negotiations that had stagnated. They decided to assign each of their officials to do more work in this area.
Both leaders recognized the significant advancements at the G7 Summit and their mutual desire to collaborate positively on global issues including sustainable development, inclusive growth, and climate action.
The leaders emphasized the strong interpersonal ties between the two nations and decided to use this living bridge to their mutual advantage.
The leaders looked forward to their next meeting as soon as possible and decided to keep in contact.
