From 2015 until 2023, Nigerian politician Muhammadu Buhari presided over the country as its president. From December 31, 1983, until August 27, 1985, he served as Nigeria’s military head of state and was a major general in the country’s army.
In 2003 and 2007, Buhari ran for president of Nigeria with the backing of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), and in 2011, he ran on the platform of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC). He was announced in December 2014 as the All Progressives Congress party’s presidential candidate for the general election of 2015. Buhari defeated incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan in the election. For the first time in Nigerian history, the incumbent president lost his attempt for reelection. On May 29, 2015, he was sworn in. Buhari defeated former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, his closest opponent, by more than 3 million votes in February 2019 to win reelection.
