Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan assumes charge as 47th Vice Chief of Naval Staff

(Forelines) – On August 1, 2025, Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan, AVSM, NM, assumed the position of 47th Vice Chief of the Naval Staff (VCNS), Indian Ministry of Defence said in a statement.

As soon as he took command, the Flag Officer laid a wreath of flowers at the National War Memorial in New Delhi as a solemn tribute to the brave men and women who gave their lives for the nation.

Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan on January 1, 1988, was commissioned into the Indian Navy after completing the 71st course at the National Defence Academy in Pune.

Over the course of his illustrious three-decade naval career, the Gunnery and Missile Systems specialist has handled a variety of command, operational, and staff postings.

The Flag Officer has served at sea aboard a number of frontline warships, including the Coast Guard OPV ICGS Sangram’s pre-commissioning crew and the Commissioning crew of the Guided Missile Destroyer INS Mysore and INS Nishank.

In addition, he served as INS Mysore’s executive officer, India’s Ministry of Defrnce said.

INS Sahyadri, the guided missile frigate, the commissioning commanding officer, the missile corvette INS Kuthar, the Coast Guard cruiser C-05, and the missile vessels INS Vibhuti and INS Nashak have all been under his command.

After the events at Galwan, he assumed command of the Eastern Fleet in February 2020 and oversaw a number of operational deployments and exercises during a period of increased maritime activity.

The Flag Officer has also excelled in significant strategic and policy-oriented staff roles. He holds degrees from the Naval War College in Goa, the Defence Services Staff College in Wellington, and the esteemed National Defence College in New Delhi.

At Naval Headquarters, he was appointed Principal Director Naval Plans, Director Naval Plans (Perspective Planning), and Joint Director and Director of Personnel (Policy).

Before taking command of the Eastern Fleet, he was the Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Policy and Plans) before being promoted to Flag Rank in February 2018. For his exceptional leadership and valiant service of the highest class, he was awarded the 2021 Ati Vishisht Seva Medal.

After then, he served as the National Defense Academy’s Deputy Commandant before being appointed Eastern Naval Command (ENC) Chief of Staff in December 2021.

He oversaw ENC’s infrastructure expansion, staff training, and operational preparedness in this role.

He was the Deputy Chief of the Integrated Defence Staff (DCIDS)-Operations and DCIDS (Policy, Plans, and Force Development) at HQ IDS before being appointed VCNS.

In these roles, he was instrumental in coordinating operations, improving integration, jointness, force development, and formulating policies that supported indigenization across the three Services.

Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan is married to Sarita, and the couple has a daughter with a humanities degree and a son who graduated with an MBA in economics from the Indian School of Business.
