(Forelines) – U.S. President Donald Trump stated Tuesday that the EU’s willingness to set up negotiations was constructive and that he hoped Europe would “open up” to trade with the U.S., while reiterating his threat to unilaterally enforce trade rules if no deal is reached, according to Reuters report.
“The E.U. called to set up meeting dates as soon as possible, I was just told. On his social media site, Trump stated, quoted by Reuters, “This is a good thing, and I hope that they will, FINALLY, like my identical demand to China, open up the European Nations for Trade with the United States of America.”
“Remember, if we are unable to reach an agreement or receive unjust treatment, I have the authority to “SET A DEAL” for trade into the United States,” Trump further stated on a post, as per the report.
According to Reuters, President Trump made his most recent remarks after reversing course over the weekend and abandoning his Friday warning to put 50% tariffs on imports from the European Union as Wall Street opened higher on Tuesday morning.
As European authorities assess the bloc’s companies’ intentions for American investments, U.S. and EU trade negotiators were scheduled to meet Monday.
