(Forelines) – On Saturday, U.S. President Donald Trump said that he and Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry were arranging for a medical ship to be delivered to Greenland, a Danish territory that Trump has indicated interest in purchasing, according to Reuters report.
Trump posted on social media shortly before hosting a dinner for Republican governors at the White House, where he sat next to and conversed with Landry, as per the report.
“Working with the fantastic Governor of Louisiana, Jeff Landry, we are going to send a great hospital boat to Greenland to take care of the many people who are sick, and not being taken care of there,” he wrote. “It is on its way!” declared Trump, quoted by Reuters.
According to Reuters, neither the White House nor Landry’s office responded to inquiries about the post, whether Denmark or Greenland had asked for the ship, or whether sick people required help. The Department of War did not immediately respond.
Danish King Frederik traveled to Greenland for the second time in a year last week, expressing support for the area despite Trump’s attempt to buy the island.
Late last month, the United States, Denmark, and Greenland conducted talks to resolve the problem following months of tensions within the NATO security alliance, Reuters added in a report.
Trump’s post was made just hours after Denmark’s Joint Arctic Command announced that it had evacuated a crew member from a U.S. submarine in Greenland waters, seven nautical miles offshore of Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, who needed immediate medical attention, as per the report.
As per Reuters, It was unclear whether the post was involved in the evacuation or what role Landry played in the situation.
Neither the Mercy nor the Comfort, two hospital ships in the U.S. Navy, are based in Louisiana.
