(Forelines) – According to Indian Ministry of Defence, a one-day “Shipbuilding Seminar on Nation Building Through Shipbuilding” will be hosted at the Manekshaw Centre in New Delhi on July 23, 2025, by the Warship Design Bureau (WDB), an elite warship design organisation under Naval Headquarters in New Delhi.
In order to become self-sufficient in warship design, WDB started out as the Central Design Office in 1964. In 1970, it changed its name to the Directorate of Naval Design. Throughout the previous 60 years,
WDB has been instrumental in the design and building of 20 different kinds of warships during the last 60 years, from aircraft carriers to seaward defense boats.
On July 1, 2025, Y12652 (Udaygiri), the 100th warship that the Indian Navy and WDB had supplied to the nation, was delivered, marking an important milestone.
“To commemorate this landmark achievement, the seminar will bring together key stakeholders from the Government of India, Indian Navy, shipyards, industry, classification societies, and academia,” Ministry of Denfence said in a Statement.
The purpose of the event is to promote coherent and forward-thinking conversations on a range of shipbuilding-related policy topics. Along with discussing the difficulties Indian shipyards and industry confront in producing ships that satisfy international standards, participants will also examine cutting-edge technology being used elsewhere.
Delivering the 100th warship with an indigenous design is a major achievement for WDB. Shipbuilding is essential to national security and defense because it provides the framework for both economic stability and strategic military capability.
A thriving shipbuilding industry supports technological innovation, fortifies domestic industries, and generates employment opportunities, all of which contribute to the long-term prosperity and growth of the country.
Self-reliance, economic growth, job creation, and the expansion of MSMEs and the nation’s auxiliary ecosystem are all benefits of the shipbuilding project.
