(Forelines) – According to a United Nations report, quoted by Reuters that looked for methods to reduce expenses and increase efficiency, not many people read U.N. reports.

On Friday the report was given to countries by U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. It originated during the course of his UN80 reform and examined how U.N. staff fulfilled thousands of orders from bodies like the Security Council and General Assembly, as per Reuters.

He stated that the U.N. system facilitated 27,000 meetings with 240 entities previous year, and the United Nations secretariat published 1,100 reports, a 20% rise since 1990, as per the report.

“The sheer number of meetings and reports is pushing the system – and all of us – to the breaking point,” according to Reuters, citing Guterres

“Many of these reports are not widely read,” he said. “The top 5% of reports are downloaded over 5,500 times, while one in five reports receives fewer than 1,000 downloads. And downloading doesn’t necessarily mean reading,” Reuters added.

According to Reuters, Guterres formed the UN80 taskforce in March as the United Nations, which is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year, faces a liquidity crisis for at least eight years in consecutive years as a consequence of all 193 member nations’ failure to pay their essential regular dues in whole or on schedule.

One of the several reform axes being explored is covered in the report released by the group late Thursday.

Reuters reported that among the recommendations Guterres made on Friday were: “Fewer meetings. Fewer reports, but ones that are able to fully meet the requirements of all mandates.”
